Secondary education in the Democratic Republic of the Congo differs from the system in the United States. It follows a six-year cycle, combining what would be considered junior high school and high school in the U.S.

The first two years are devoted to general studies, providing students with a broad academic foundation. The last four years are more specialized and career-oriented, allowing students to choose a specific field of study based on their interests and future goals.

For example:

  • Students who aspire to become teachers enter the pedagogy track
  • Those interested in medicine or health sciences focus on biology and chemistry
  • Other students pursue technical and vocational tracks, such as sewing, carpentry, mechanics, and related practical skills

This structure enables students to gain both academic knowledge and practical skills, preparing them either for higher education or for direct entry into the workforce.
